Meet the MHHA Committee

The Midlands Heavy Horse Association is run entirely by dedicated volunteers who share a deep passion for heavy horses and traditional horsemanship. Our committee members work tirelessly behind the scenes to organise events, manage memberships, and support our growing community. Together, they help ensure that the MHHA continues to promote, preserve, and celebrate the role of heavy horses across the Midlands.

Chairman I’m a professional horseman, using my horses for weddings, funerals, demonstrations as well as showing them in ‘Trade Turnout’. Other than for a short break when I was working away, I have been a member of the MHHA since I was 14 years old and because the association has given me so much I want to give something back

I started working with horses when I left school at 15 and, after spending 3 years in Germany and 12 months in Australia, as well as many years in the UK working with different horse disciplines, I got a sensible job in an office, however married to Kevin I can’t escape horses entirely.

I joined the MHHA a few years ago after looking for something to do with my horse, after I retired from riding due to a (non-horse related!) injury. I quickly discovered how much fun working heavy horses was and I am now hooked, taking every opportunity to learn all I can. The association was the perfect place to learn from experienced people and horses, in return I am keen to help where I can.

My interest in horses developed during my forties when I decided to learn to ride, became hooked and I now own two cobs. I live in Nottingham and was introduced to the MHHA a few years ago by a friend, I would love to have my own Heavy eventually but in the meantime I enjoy helping friends with theirs.

I joined the MHHA to gain some much needed experience but also to make friends in the local area. I have a French Percheron, Kolga Du Cretil, but she’s better known as Koogee-Boogie. We also have Olivia who has joined our team who is a British Bred Percheron. The MHHA has been such a fantastic support network for bring on my youngster – I have found a new level of confidence too which I never had with my light horses. I joined the Committee after my 1st year as I want to be able to give back and support this wonderful association in ways that can add value to all

My love of heavy horses stemmed from the lovingly polished but long redundant set of harness that hung on the kitchen door at my Great Aunt’s farm as I grew up and the photos on the walls of times gone by.  They had grown up working horses and the harness stayed in its place for 30 years after its last use, in respect of how things used to be.The fact that “progress” put these lovely breeds out of a job and onto the rare and endangered lists has always hit home hard with me and the answer as I see it, is to champion those breeds and get the public to see, enjoy and want one of their own, so the more opportunities people have to be able to get up close to them, and to learn from others who own, work and enjoy their horses, the better their chance of survival will be.My parents in law bred Shires for more than 20 years and my sister had Shires and Belgian Draft Horses, so I have been able to enjoy them vicariously and joined the MHHA last year to be able to carry that on!

For a good part of my life I have been involved with horses one way or another. It was four years ago I joined the MHHA and found myself very humbled by the amount of hands-on help, guidance and welcoming friendship. The Association for me is the perfect place to enjoy the heavy horses even if you are experienced, a new beginner, heavy horse owner or not, the association has something for everyone who is interested, I for one am keen to assist and help in any way I can.

My true passion now is the heavy horse, and I joined the MHHA to expand my knowledge of them and to share a love of the big horse with like-minded owners and enthusiasts. Most people’s first pony is a Shetland or Welsh Section A – I waited until I was approaching 40 and then bought a shire horse! Unbeknown to me she was in foal – so I got two for the price of one! I now own two grey mares – Matilda (the “foal”) and Tilly (Tiny Toes).
