Our Origins

The Midlands Heavy Horse Association (MHHA) was founded in April 1993, when a group of enthusiasts gathered at the Bass Brewery in Burton-on-Trent. Among them, Terry Keegan and John Nicholson recognised the need for an organisation in the Midlands that could bring together people passionate about heavy horses. Their vision was to create a friendly, inclusive association that encouraged owners to work their horses in a relaxed and supportive environment — free from the pressures of competition.

A Place for Community and Learning

From its earliest days, the MHHA aimed to provide a hub for social connection, knowledge sharing, and hands-on experience. Regular meet-ups, working events, and social gatherings offered members a chance to exchange advice, discuss training techniques, and enjoy the company of like-minded horse enthusiasts. This supportive community has always been particularly valuable for newcomers learning to handle heavy horses — animals that, despite their “gentle giant” reputation, require skill, confidence, and respect to manage safely.

Supporting the Next Generation

Now celebrating over thirty years since its formation, the Association remains deeply committed to encouraging young people to get involved with heavy horses. We recognise that today’s newcomers are the next generation of horsemen and women, and we take pride in offering opportunities for them to gain experience and confidence. Through experience days, training sessions, and working weekends, members of all ages are welcome to learn, participate, and discover the satisfaction of working alongside these magnificent animals.
