Belgian and Ardennes Heavy Horses in the UK

The Belgian and Ardennes breeds are becoming increasingly popular among heavy horse enthusiasts for both work and riding. While there are currently no dedicated UK societies for these breeds, several respected breeders across the country are supporting their growth and maintaining close links with established organisations in Europe.

Origins of the Ardennes Horse

The Ardennes is one of the oldest known draft horse breeds, originating from the Ardennes region that spans Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. Recognised for their strong bone structure and thick legs, these horses are renowned for their strength, calm temperament, and suitability for heavy draft work.

A Breed Steeped in History

Tracing its ancestry back to Ancient Rome, the Ardennes has evolved through selective breeding over centuries. Although various breeds have influenced its development, only the Belgian breed had a significant impact. The first Ardennes horses arrived in the United States in the early 20th century, with the European breed registry established in 1929. Historically used as war horses — both as cavalry mounts and artillery pullers — Ardennes horses are now valued for farm work, logging, meat production, and competitive driving. Their genetics have also influenced the creation of several other heavy horse breeds across Europe and Asia.

The Belgian Draught Horse

The Belgian Draught descends from the powerful farm horses of central Belgium, notably the Colosse de la Méhaigne from Namur, the Gris de Nivelles et du Hainaut from Walloon Brabant, and the Gros de la Dendre from East Flanders and Flemish Brabant. Documented breeding dates back to the seventeenth century, with the first official studbook founded in 1886. The breed made its way to America in the late nineteenth century, where it became one of the most recognised and admired draft horses in the world.
